Incorporated in
1904 St George has a history that dates back to 1783
when Peter Clinch, one of St George’s founding fathers, landed with a
group of colonists at the foot of what is now Clinch Street.
Steeped in the history of Charlotte County
and the Maritime Provinces St George features the
oldest Presbyterian Church in the country built in
1790 and in the mid 1800’s St George had a
significant shipbuilding industry and was renowned
for its red granite, produced in one of the seven
granite mills that at that time were operating in
this area.
St George
features many attraction that benefit both the
visitor and resident alike.
The Canal
Covered Bridge,
Canal
Beach, the Granite Post
Office, the Day Adventure Centre, and even a rival
to the Loch Ness Monster, (although no-one can
remember seeing the Lake Utopia Monster, we still
wonder). The
spectacular Gorge scenery is worth many visits, as
the landscape changes dramatically with the changing
tides. The cliffs on either side are said to be
riddled with caves, one of which is rumored to
connect with
Lake
Utopia.
Shortly after
the dam was built, the salmon ladder was installed
to benefit stocks of wild salmon that migrate up the Magaguadavic River to spawn. The ladder has enabled a
serious conservation effort to protect and enhance
the wild salmon run.
And you can further savor the history and splendor
by touring the surrounding area to see the
New River
Saltwater
Beach
Park, Herring Weirs,
Aquaculture sites, or just marvel at our phenomenal
tides and take in one of the largest sardine
factories in the area, or go whale watching with one
of our local guides.
